The illustrations are designed to transport young readers into the world of Arnold, making them feel like they are part of his incredible journey. We had the opportunity to speak with Alexandra over email about her creative process, the challenges she faced, and what it means to illustrate the life of such an iconic figure. Here’s what she had to share:

Q: Your illustrations play a significant role in bringing the biography of Arnold Schwarzenegger to life for young readers. Could you describe your thought process and approach to depicting such a vibrant and diverse life story?

A: Picture books are a lot of work to illustrate and I never take on a project without my full heart behind it. I start by taking a minute to consider what the project means to me on a personal level, to make sure the excitement will carry me through to the end and help me make the best art I can. I remember nursing my 3 week old son when I got the email and I was supposed to be on maternity leave but, my mind was flooded by memories with my husband, dad, father in law, grandfather and brother making popcorn, turning down the lights and getting lost in an Arnold adventure. We love Arnold in our house but, I never stopped to think about what an impact his legacy has had on my family. Arnold has been responsible for inspiring us to be so much more than we ever could have imagined. His accomplishments are larger than life and his story dares you to dream. As someone who makes art for a living, I love stories that start with someone saying “you can’t.” My grandfather always said, “there’s no such thing as you can’t” and I’ve always stuck to that. Stories like Arnold’s are proof that hard work and determination can make your dreams come true. He is also proof that making art matters, aside from his accomplishments off screen, the movies he’s been a part of have touched so many lives and inspired so many heroes. Arnold’s is story I want my son to hear. When I make art, I always think of how the story will make a positive impact on the world, after that, I just let my heart do the drawing.

Q: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s story spans from a small town in Austria to Hollywood and the Governor’s office in California. How did you capture these distinct settings and periods in your illustrations?

A: The museum in his home town helped a lot! It was nice to have reference of his bedroom in Austria because I’ve never been myself! I do a lot of historical biographies and I try to collect as much reference as I can to piece together scenes I have no reference for. For example, Illustrating the background at Venice Beach, I compiled as many reference photos of the strip during that time as I could but still had to make some stuff up because the camera angles I had to work with didn’t show me what would have actually been there when Arnold arrived. between 1940 and 1990 there have been a handful of different shops there and the signs have changed a few times. I used the 1970s as a jumping off point for reference, vibe and color, then pulled reference from a few different decades to make up for the information I didn’t have.

Q: As an illustrator, what was the most challenging aspect of working on “Arnold Schwarzenegger: A Little Golden Book Biography”, and conversely, what part did you enjoy the most?

A: The hardest part was likeness! I usually draw people pretty stylized which means simplifying features. I always struggle with where I want to land on the spectrum of stylized and realistic. A lot of the feedback I got from the publishing team pushed the illustrations more toward realistic. It was a challenge to keep it looking fun and cartoony for young readers while also delivering the level of detail they wanted but I think we did ok! Conversely I LOVE drawing people So this was a welcome challenge!

Q: Arnold Schwarzenegger has been the subject of many famous artists like Andy Warhol and Hiro Yamagata. What does it mean for you, as an illustrator, to follow in their footsteps in portraying such an iconic figure in your own unique style?

A: Haha wow I didn’t think of that. I’ve done a lot of biographies but only a handful of them have been living. “Fly Girl Fly” The story of Shaista Waiz was the first time I had to paint someone who would see my depiction of them. I was very nervous when we started to do press for the book because I actually got to meet her and I hoped she was happy with my work. When I illustrated “Fauci,” everyone kept asking me if I got to meet him, I didn’t but I still thought a lot about wether or not he was happy with the illustrations. I do lot of illustrated family portraits but, illustrating a book about someone so famous carries a little more pressure. Over time, Ive learned to put less pressure on myself because all that matters is that the readers are inspired at the end of the book. I hope that if or when Arnold sees this book, he knows I made it with love was honored to be a part of sharing his story.
